Most drivers first hear about recalibration when they replace a windshield. The camera behind the glass comes out and goes back in, so it has to be reset. What catches people off guard is how many other jobs disturb the same systems. If the camera, radar or sensors that run lane-keeping and automatic braking shift even slightly, they have to be recalibrated to read the road correctly, and several routine repairs do exactly that.
What ADAS is, in brief
Advanced driver assistance systems are the safety features that help with steering, braking and spacing: lane-keeping, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition and blind-spot monitoring. They draw on a forward-facing camera behind the windshield, radar units behind the grille or bumper, and ultrasonic sensors around the body. Each part is aimed from a fixed, known position, and the tolerances are tight, down to fractions of a degree. Move a sensor a little and its picture of the road shifts, which is why recalibration exists.
Common triggers beyond the glass

Static, dynamic, or both
Recalibration comes in two forms, and the vehicle decides which. Static calibration is done in the shop, with manufacturer target boards set at measured distances and heights on a level floor in a controlled space. Dynamic calibration is done by driving the vehicle at a set speed on well-marked roads while the system relearns from the live scene. Some makes need one, some need the other, and some need both in sequence.
This is where Prairie conditions matter. Dynamic calibration depends on clear lane markings and reasonable weather, and a snow-covered highway or a faded rural road can stall the procedure until conditions improve. A shop that can complete a static calibration indoors is a real advantage through a Western Canada winter, when the roads will not always cooperate.

A camera or radar that is even slightly off can place the vehicle in the wrong part of its lane, brake late, or steer against you when lane-keeping fights a correction. Most automakers now call for recalibration after the jobs listed above, and a documented calibration matters beyond safety: skipping a required one can affect a warranty position or an insurance claim if a system is later found misaligned. A proper job ends with the fault codes cleared, the system verified, and a record you can keep. When you do not need it
Not every visit calls for recalibration. A chip repair away from the camera leaves it untouched, so the system stays as it was. Work that does not move a sensor, change ride height, or disturb the steering or front end generally leaves calibration alone. The simple test is whether the repair touched anything the cameras and sensors rely on to aim. When it did, recalibration belongs on the work order.
